What is your return policy?


We want you to be satisfied with the books you buy from Red Cart Books. Books that are purchased in the store should be examined before buying so that complete satisfaction can be assured, and the sale will be considered final. Books that are purchased online and picked up locally can be examined at the time of pickup and again, the sale will be considered final.


Books that are purchased online and shipped can be returned within ten days of receipt for a full refund. Book must be in the same condition in which it was purchased. Please notify us by email or phone before returning a book. Returned books should be in the original (or equivalent) packaging. Refunds initiated on item return and inspection.


What payment methods do you accept?


We currently accept Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal if purchasing online. Local purchases can be paid in cash at the time of pickup if not already paid through the online shopping cart. We also use the Square device and accept debit (tap only) and credit cards in the store.


How do you evaluate and grade your books?


The following is meant as a general guideline. 
As New - The book has no visible defects, scuff marks, or wear, regardless of age.
Fine - The book is in almost new condition, may have been opened and read, and may have almost imperceptible scuff marks or wear.
Very Good - The book shows signs of gentle wear, including bent corners, scuff marks, slight creases in spine but no cracks in binding (for paperbacks), slight yellowing of page edges in an otherwise fine old book, or other small defects.
Good - Most used books fall in this category, showing wear of a book read many times, and may include small tears, cracked spine but with pages intact (in paperbacks), scribbles and underlining, dampstains or slight water damage, fading on spine, creased pages and covers, spots, dents, and stains.
Fair - A well-worn book that may have many of the above defects, or may have larger tears, loose binding, significant shelfwear, water stains, etc. The book is still in good reading condition.
Poor - The book may have loose pages, missing or detached binding, significant water damage, rips, wear, stains, or spots. Generally a good reading copy. Old books may be assigned this grade and still be offered for sale because of their intrinsic value.


Do you charge GST?


No, not yet, but that will change sometime in the future. When we near the point at which the government requires us to register, we will do so and will be charging 5% GST thereafter on all Canadian orders, in full compliance with tax laws. PST is not charged on books in Ontario.


Do the pictures I see online show the actual book?


For our mass-market and more recent used books, we do use stock photos. These are labelled as such under the photo of the individual book.  For our rare, antiquarian, and collectible books, we will be uploading pictures taken of each, as time permits. Please request pictures and a more complete description if you are interested in a collectible book. 


Do you buy books?


We prefer to sell your books on commission. There is a limit to how many books we can buy, process, store, and deliver. This would limit the books available on Red Cart Books. Rather than only offer books that will yield a good profit for us, we prefer to let everyone, both buyers and sellers, profit from a thriving used bookstore offering a full range of used books. 


If you just want to get rid of your books, we do take books based on condition, demand, the number of copies we already have, and so on. However, we do not give cash for books, but offer instead a store credit you can use towards the purchase of more books. 


If you are looking for somewhere to donate books, we will gladly come pick them up, but please note we do not accept encyclopedias, Reader's Digest, magazines of any kind, badly torn books unless very old, or other items that cannot be sold.


How much do you charge in commission to sell my books?


For books that have some value, we charge 40% commission to sell your book and we contact you when the book is sold. You have the option of keeping the book with you until it is sold online.
